Hartington Pharmaceutical has chosen Catalonia as the location for a laboratory that will specialise in the development of new natural drugs. The company, specialised in the development of 100% natural medicines, plants to invest 10 million euros in a laboratory that will operate under GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) guidelines, which certify compliance with a series of rules and procedures that assure quality and consistency of the results of certain types of research.

The company, created in 1996 by three Ukrainians, one Georgian and one Spaniard, has had one product, called Nasodren, on the market since 2001. The medicine, which can be dispensed without a prescription and can be bought in parapharmacies, is a treatment for sinusitis made from the cyclamen plant.

Developed by researchers from Georgia, Spain, Germany and the United States, the product has been marketed in Spain since 2006 with the name Fluirespira Forte by the Italian multinational pharmaceutical company Zambon.

Alex Levdanski, Hartington’s CEO, explains that the company is currently developing what will be its second product, a cream for treating fungal skin infections, cold sores and acne. The company’s goal is to launch it on the market in two years’ time.

Size: Hartington currently operates in 19 countries, including Italy, Germany, Russia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Romania and Greece, with sales amounting to 4 million euros in 2008. The group expects a turnover of 5 million euros this year.
